(Yahoo!) - Backstage at night one of this season's "American Idol" finale, judge Keith Urban spoke to the press, and he was asked to recall his most moving moment of Season 12. Was it Kree Harrison's homecoming? Lazaro Arbos's audition? Angie Miller's Boston tribute?
"Hearing that Randy [Jackson] was leaving," Keith answered. When reporters chuckled, Keith added, "It's true!"
Keith and Randy became fast friends this year when they sat on the "Idol" panel together, Keith explained. "I bonded with Randy quickly, because we're both players. I joined an ensemble like this the same way I'd join a band. I like being in a band, I like being in an ensemble, and I like being on a team. And I felt that immediately with Ryan [Seacrest] and Randy, particularly."
However, despite their chumminess, Keith said he found out that Randy was quitting "Idol" after 12 seasons "when everybody else did, literally" — that is, when Randy announced his resignation via E! News last week.
As for whether Keith would like to return to a Randy-less "Idol" next season, if asked, he answered: "Iwould, yeah! I mean, I literally enjoyed coming to work every day. And that's a rarity."
Keith will perform his new single, "Little Bit of Everything," on Thursday night's grand "Idol" finale. Randy is also performing, playing bass on a medley of greatest hits by his longtime friend, fellow judge, and former client, Mariah Carey.
